"Big and Bold." Manchester by planxty

If you were to ask someone from the UK what they thought of Manchester, you might get a range of responses, ranging from Oop North (from a Southerner), Garnada TV / Coronation Street, flat caps, dark Satanic mills, possibly L.S. Lowry, almost undoubtedly rain, Bernard Manning and so on.
Ask anyone from virtually any corner of the globe and they will probably say Manchester United, the famous football (soccer) club, possibly in the same breath as George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney. In the interests of impartiality here, I should say that their crosstown and bitter rivals Manchester City are doing very well at present.
Ask a music fan of a certain age and musical proclivity and Factory Records and the Hacienda club will undoubtedly get a mention. Ask a canal enthusiat like myself and the word heaven may well come to the fore. Well, Manchester is all these things and a fair bit more besides.
I had not been to Manchester for at least 25 years and possibly longer so I was interested to return to the City recently, although it is difficult to do too much in two days. I visited in December when the Christmas markets were in full swing and very impressive they were too, although the weather was pretty dismal. If you are interested, VT members in the region annually organise a VT meet to visit them. Check the meetings pages for details.
As well as the markets, I visited two very interesting museums, had a lovely walk along some very historic canals, ate a beautiful Spanish meal and even found time for a pint or two!
I thoroughly enjoyed my short time there and, being a shade over two hours on the train from my home city of London, intend to visit again very soon.
- Pros:Plenty to do, good museums, friendly people.
- Cons:The weather is notorious.
- In a nutshell:Far more to the place than football.

Great tips Fergy! Just been to Mancs twice in the past week, and now want to get back on the train for tapas, MOSI and a saunter down the canals - Hope to see you at the Christmas Markets this year!
Great travelogue Planxty - I was in Manchester for business recently and was very impressed with how friendly and vibrant the city was. Sorry I didnt get to the museum - will add it on my to do list for next time.
