"A trip down memory lane." Walton-on-the-Naze by planxty

It's been a while.

I took myself off for a daytrip from London last week and visited the "holy triumvirate" of Clacton, Frinton and Walton. The first two are "on-Sea", but Walton, despite being very obviously on-Sea, still clings to the title of Walton-on-Naze. Apparently, Naze is an old word for a promontory or estuary (as in this case). Anyway, it is just another one of those delightful English placenames.

So why a trip down memory lane? Well, the only other time I visited here was about 15 years ago when I played at the wonderful Walton Folk festival, which I'm glad to say still thrives.

What I found on my return was a tidy little seaside town with the obligatiry pier and associated entertainments, which has obviously seen much more activity in days past. Like so many other places, Walton is an indication of the decline of the English seaside resort. Having said that, it's a pleasant place for a day out and certainly worth the trip from London, of only for a breath of really fresh (by which I mean a sea gale) air.

Should you care to vgisit, here is the website. Walton on the Naze.
