A very historic city.

So what is in a name. York, to use the current version, has had many over the millenia, and this very accurately reflects the historical importance of the place. Eboracum, Jorvik, York, take your pick but whatever you call it, it is indeed one of the great tourist attractions of the United Kingdom, on the "Grand Tour" with Stonehenge, London, Edinburgh and Stratford-upon-Avon.

The Minster (pictured) dominates the skyline and is one of the most impressive ecclesiastical buildings in England. Other than that, there are many other old churches, street markets, the ancient Shambles area of shops in a medieaval setting of tiny streets, and a few specific tourist attractions.

I first visited the City about 30 years ago, and did not return until about 2008, with another more recent visit in late 2010, and little has changed. It is still a wonderful place to visit, rich in history with good facilities for the tourist trade mentioned above, and it really is worth a day or two of your time.
