"Home of the Dagenham Dustbin" Dagenham by barkingcreek

Dagenham is just outside East London in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Its name derives from the anglo saxon Daeccas Ham. The Town was built around Dagenham Village in the 1930,s by the London County Council and when built was the biggest housing estate in the world.
Henry Ford built a car plant here. Elizabeth Fry had a fishing cottage here and just up the road in Barking, the Gunpowder plot was hatched in Eastbury House with Guy Fawkes ( actually they rented a lock up under Parliament and filled it with gunpowder... cunning eh?). Another tourist was Captain Cook who married a local lass and spent a lot of time here. ...I wonder if his lust for travel had anything to do with marrying a Barking girl...Hmmm
