A Genuine German Mailbox... ...with award winning graffiti right next to it. All mailboxes in Germany are yellow. They are good for snail-mail only. For e-mail you need a different type of mailbox, even in Germany, where everything is supposed to be very efficient. Efficiency, like many other things, is a German myth. The Germans' good taste in the arts is not a myth, though. Don't you think that placing a yellow mailbox next to blue graffiti is a magnificent idea and a real eye-pleaser? It's another myth that the Germans have no sense of humor. In fact, they have a great sense of humor. Where else in the world can you find a fictitious member of parliament? A Phantom of the Bundestag, so to speak? The guy's name is Jakob Maria Mierscheid and many articles have been written about him, he's been interviewed for some prestigious magazines, and he was said to have appeared in a talk show on German TV. In the next election (if you're a German citizen) - vote Mierscheid! |
| Multicultural Entrance Door |
| | Here is another tasteful example... ...of fine urban art. Look at this beautiful color coordinated entrance door to an apartment building. Imagine yourself returning home from work in the evening, all stressed out and grumpy, and then walking through such a pretty door. That would cheer up anybody's worst mood for the better. Only the beer is missing. In contrast to Germany's many myths, Germany isn't really all that German anymore, which is an advantage IMHO ( = In My Humble Opinion). It has become quite multicultural, especially in the cities, just like this door. The countryside and the villages are not as cosmopolitan, but quaint and beautiful. Yet, there's even a certain amount of rural multiculturalism, since it's possible to find one or the other Bavarian that has relocated to a seaside village in Germany's north, or an East Frisian from Germany's Far North who's running a successful woodcutters business in Bavaria. |
And here you see a peaceloving... ...and obedient German citizen. Isn't he adorable? His name is Schnuffi and he looks a tiny bit depressed because he lives in a curtain store, and curtains are just not his thing. He prefers bratwurst. Dogs are the Germans' most favored companions, ranking before cats and reptiles. Rumor has it that the new government of Angela Merkel is currently discussing an amendment to reward all naturalized dogs with German citizenship and voting rights. | | |
