One could be misled to believe that Grado means "degree" in Italian, as in "today it's 26 grado in Grado", but this is not the case. The city was founded by the Romans and the name is derived from "Aquae Gradatae", which means "gradual waters", such as in gradually entering the Lake Garda (Lago di Garda) on which shores Grado is located.
The photo shows my mom and myself with the city and the lake in the background. My mom's red t-shirt and my blue hat were high degree Grado fashion at that time. |
| | Willi and Inge in Grado In the past Grado was a famous fishing center, famous for its large Grado fish, and now Grado is a famous lake resort famous for its lovely historical downtown full of restaurants. Apart from Lake Garda and a lovely historical downtown, Grado has a number of other attractions, for example inscriptions, sarcophagi, marble and bronze sculptures and, in my opinion, too many tourists.
Here you can see two tourists who didn't overcrowd Grado - my dad and my mom on one Grado's beautiful, tree-lined promenades. |
A Street in Grado This is one of the picturesque Grado streets in the lovely historical downtown of Grado which is full of restaurants. You can't really see any restaurants in this photo (I can't either), but only because we can't see them, doesn't mean they aren't there. | | |

| Pros: | "Lake Garda, lovely historical downtown." | | Cons: | "It is easy to find the lake, whereas it can be difficult to spot the restaurants in the lovely historical downtown." | | In A Nutshell: | "A high degree Grado Experience." |
