...Not Venice, California Please note: this page is about Venice, Italy. If you would like to read more about Venice, California, click here. This mysterious, charming city is located on 110 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea, and that is also the reason why the city is slowly sinking. So you should go see it now while it is still above the sea level, some day you will be able to visit it in a submarine only which may not be as fun, especially if you feel claustrophobic under water. Venice's Italian name is Venezia and it was named after Elena Lucrezia Venezia Cornaro Piscopia, the head of an international, medieval banking dynasty. Not only was Venice famous for its banking business, it also was an independent republic and a major maritime power during the middle ages and the renaissance. The photo shows the online skyline of Venice, but only if you view this photo on VT. The original paper copy is an offline skyline of Venice. |
| | Present Day Venice... ...is famous for its canals, architecture, art, and its numerous bridges bridging the 110 small islands. The Italian salad dressing (also known as 110 Island Dressing) was invented here. It goes without saying that Venice is also famous for its Venetian cuisine.
The photo shows the Basilica San Marco, one of the landmarks in downtown Venice. The construction was financed via monetary donations by world traveler Marco Polo, who was a Venice native. Unfortunatley he was not a VT member. |
The Venice of 1972... ...was not so much different from present day Venice, except that my mom and myself (shown in the photo) were younger. So were all the other people who happened to run across this picture. The following noteworthy people were born in Venice: - Lorenzo Lotto (painter and inventor of the Lotto game) - Antonio Vivaldi (baroque composer and violinist) - Elena Lucrezia Venezia Cornaro Piscopia (the first woman to receive a doctorate degree in finance and business) - Marco Polo (world traveler and discoverer) P.S. I was not born in Venice. | | | Gabi and Mom on Piazza San Marco |
