Rehovot

by Trillian2005 - last update: Mar 23, 2009

Country Roads...

Herzl Street, Rehovot
...take me some 30 km south of Tel Aviv to the city of Rehovot, which means Roads. I, however, didn't take a road trip to the Roads, but I traveled to Rehovot by train, which is fast, easy, and convenient from Tel Aviv.

My friend Ilana now lives in Rehovot, so that was the main reason for me to visit there, yet, Rehovot was full of unexpected (and some expected) surprises. For example: the Roads main road is called Herzl Street and is an almost identical copy of Weizman Street in Givatayim (or vice versa). Ilana and I strolled along Herzl Street, which is lined by larger and smaller stores, restaurants, and banks on either side, plus the mandatory Israeli corner stores in the corners.
Rehovot, Roads to Candy Lane

Candy Lane...

...is a sub-street of the Roads' Herzl Street. This was one of the unexpected surprises, since it opened up totally unexpectedly in front of me and I was surrounded by colorful candy in the shapes of roads and roundabouts. The picture shows the Roads' highways and as I liked their colors best, I decided to display this one here.

Please note: Candy Lane in Rehovot is neither related to nor inspired by Candy Lane in Hershey Park, Pennsylvania, USA.

The Roads...

...was founded in 1890 by Polish Jews. The city now has a population of 100.001, many of them of Yemenite ancestry and Ethiopians.

Rehovot is famous for the Weizman Institute of Science, which was founded by Israel's first president Chaim Weizman, who also founded Weizman Street in Givatayim.

The photo doesn't show Weizman Street nor Chaim Weizman, but a beautiful tree on the Weizman Institute's campus.

Pros:"Colorful and interesting, especially Candy Lane."
Cons:"Its main street looks like the main street in Givatayim."
In A Nutshell:"I had a great time."

OK, just to let you know, the name is not coming from roads or streets but from "wide expanses", check Wikipedia for more details ;-)

Hey that tree is the Rose-ringed Parakeet tree, the same one my NIMBY neigbour has, but the parakeets ate enough flowers and left again. The last and only time I visited Rehovot was in 1981, gosh I am getting old!
