Ljubljana is the lively capital of Slovenia. It is actually a pretty small city, with a population of only about a quarter of a million, but it certainly feels like a large city. It is both the political and cultural captial of Slovenia and it is conveniently in the center of the country.
The city is filled with interesting architecture, nice restaurants and a lively nightlife. This is also a good place to base yourself if you are planning to make trips to the rest of Slovenia, since it is the transportation hub of the country also.
English is widely spoken in the city (especially by the young people), so finding your way around and deciphering a menu is no problem.
The only thing that surprised me in Slovenia was the prices. I don't think that it is the cheap former communist country that many people who have visited it in the last couple of years have told me it was. The food was a little less expensive, but everything else (hotel/hostels, transportation, etc) was on par with the rest of Europe. |
