Werfen is a small town about forty-five minutes south of Salzburg in the eastern foothills of the Austrian Alps on the Salzach river. It is a pretty town that is a great place to spend some quiet time and get to know a nice Austrian town. Surrounded by mountains on either side, it is a perfect place to stay while exploring the region around Salzburg. Through there are two major attractions in this city, few people spend the night, therefore, accomadations are cheap and plentiful. If you're tired of staying in a loud hostel or budget hotel in a large city, the guesthouses here are great.

One major attraction of Werfen is the ice cave located a few kilometers away 3/4 of a way up one of the mountains near the city. The trip to the cave gives you a chance to see a great natural wonder and get great views of the valley below. The other major attraction, is a castle overlooking the city. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to see the castle. Give yourselves at least a full day here to see both attractions.
