| The arches in the Mezquita |
The capital of the Cordoba Caliphate from the 8th to 11th centuries this city has a lot of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish history. With all the history though, it is a relatively small and manageable city. All the sights are in a compact area between the Guadalquivir river and the bus/train station. The most visited site is the Mezquita Cathedral and no doubt you’ve seen plenty of pictures of the many arches it has. I thought it was a little overrated, but there’s a lot more to visit in the city, including the large Alcazar with it’s beautiful garden, Roman ruins, the Juderia and it’s narrow passageways, the Sinogoga, and market. It’s definitely worth at least one day’s visit. Two if you want to visit Medina Az-Zahara (which I didn’t get a chance to – next time). |
