Rothenburg is one of the most popular destinations in Germany (and probably the most visited town on the Romantic Road). The town takes you make to Germany in the middle ages with those quintessential "fairy tale" buildings and cobblestone streets. The village is truly medieval, complete with stone wall surrounding it. Here's the problem: everyone knows about Rothenburg. In the summer crowds by the bus-load invade the town and thus, it loses some appeal. (For this reason, I perfer Dinkelsbuhl). The good news is that everyone speaks English and the area is catered to fit your needs. If you want Rothenburg to yourself you'll have to stay overnight (there are plenty of nice inns in town). If not, good luck getting a picture of anything without 50 faces obstructing the view. One great thing about Rothenburg is that unlike several of the other small towns in the area, there is more to do than just walk around and soak up the scenery. The most popular attractions are: the torture museum, Christmas shop, and Rathaus. Also, in the summer it can get extremely hot.
