Known as "The Pearl of the Romantic Road," Wurzburg may be your first or last stop in your journey along the path. Wurzburg has some interesting sites, such as the Residenz and Mainfränkisches Fortress, so it is worth visiting. However, I would not recommend staying here over night. There are much more scenic towns in the area with much more charm. My best advice is to stay overnight in Rothenburg and make Wurzburg a day trip (this way you see the sights of Wurzburg and return home to the quaint town, no longer jammed packed with tourists). Wurzburg lost the bulk of its charm after its heavy bombing in WWII. Most of everything you see is rebuilt but not to its original design. The picture you see above is of the very small old town, which up close, does not look nearly as nice (due to graffiti and trash). On the other hand, the surrounding vineyards are pictureesque and counteract the messy streets. Wurzburg is a very welcoming small city that is not a must see, but can be a pleasant excursion. |
