You Don't Have to Stay with the Tourists Travel guides will tell you all about the western part of the island -- or the southern coast. If you want to shop and spend a lot of money at fancy hotels, those areas are for you.
We had a wonderful week in Maui, and spent a mere two hours in Lahaina. There was plenty to do from our "home base" in Pukalani, a residential neighborhood in the center of the island. It was close to Paia and Makawao, which were delights. Plenty of affordable shopping and meals.
When we wanted to snorkel or go whale watching, the drive to the aquarium or Kihei wasn't bad at all.
Best of all, it was cool in the mornings and evenings, since we were up above the beaches, on the way up to Hale'akala. Great views, too! |
