This spot right here has some of the best diving in Ontario, snorkel or scuba. 95% of the time the water is crystal clear. The underwater scenery is breath taking, lots of fish to see, caves , structures , shipwrecks, it's just excellent diving.
So good, that when I was in a dive shop in Key Largo, I told the dive instructor I was diving mainly in Sarnia, and he knew all about it, which shocked me since Key Largo and Sarnia are on opposite sides of the country. It was one of his favourite spots to dive. If your snorkeling, you must go and ride the current. Very powerful current, and you dive and ride, gives you the feeling of flying underwater. It's amazing. ( Be warned, the current is very strong and very dangerous if you are not a strong swimmer, it has killed many a novice or weak swimmer. As long as you can swim well and stay along the side you'll be safe. )
My neighbour Steven and I use to dive here for 4 to 6 hours each day in the summer, ending the day off with a big campfire at my firepit and lots of ice cold Coronas.
Also a must see, local youths will stunt jump and high dive off the base of the bridge. Fun to watch, but even more fun to do. I was always the one doing backflips off the top rail. It's funny because alot of times the older tourist would think I was commiting suicide and freak out, until they look around and see that it's just a common sport to do.
Fishing here is great, and if you need any help, just ask a local fisherman, they'll gladly tell you the local fishing techniques and what bait or lures to use. Just be careful and don't snag any snorkelers or swimmers.
Sarnia also has a nice beach, doesn't get over crowded.
Sarnia Bay is a main stop for boaters going to and coming from Lake Huron. Those boaters love their booze, great party people. Older and rich, they party quietly but fun to drink with.
Sarnia has parks all along the riverside. They tend to be the main gathering point for locals, who all just love to sit and watch the water and the boats.
There are chip trucks everywhere along the river, and they usually have big long line ups to get fries.
Summer is the only time people in this small shy city seem to leave their houses. During winter everyone hides. Except around Christmas, where they have the Festival of lights, which is a must see if you are in Sarnia in December. The whole park is filled with Christmas lights and light sculptures. Also take a tour down Finch Street, the residents have the whole stretch of street covered in lights.
- Pros:Great diving, current riding, the fishing, Bayfest.
- Cons:Chemical Valley (smells), snobby chicks, Bayfest, no real restaurants
- In a nutshell:Go diving.
