Overcast

by newagehealer - last update: Jan 2, 2005

We were in Poipu for 6 days after Christmas and it was mostly overcast except for one sunny day that became partially cloudy later in the day. We had some heavy rain, mostly but not entirely at night. Waiamea Canyon on the Sunny day was beautiful, but we meandered on the way up to the Kalalau lookout where we got a beautiful view of....fog. The guideboook said go early for he best views, we did get some absolutely spectacular views along the 18 mile road up the hill, but I would recommend that you drive to the top without stopping, get the Kalalau lookout view, and then meander on the way back. The Ultimate Hawaii Guidebook, highly recommended, suggests that if you get to the top and it is cloudy/foggy, wait awhile as it may clear up. You are at a high altitude and it may seem like you are in a fog bank, but you may just be in a cloud bank that will blow through in 2 to 20 minutes. It was still relatively sunny on the way down, with the good lower elevation views still available.

best for hikers, worst for kids

Kauai has great hiking, some nice views even if cloudy/rainy. Bring your raincoat and an umbella, we needed one desperately to unload our car at the Marriot Waiohai Beach Resort during a rainstorm.
Winter is the rainier season, so in our experience this is not the best Island to go to if you want a lot of sun, at least at this time of year. You probably will get some sun but head for Kona if you want to be more sure. Only two of the days were overcast, but mostly cloudy was how it was except for our one sunny day.
The kids didn't like the rain, our helicopter flight got cancelled due to bad weather-schedule one early in your trip as cancellations are not unusual. We decided to go swimming even though it was very overcast and that was fine with the kids as they loved just being in the pool. It was still 78 degrees or so and both the ocean and pool were adequately warm, although I would've preferred the ocean to be warmer. It wasn't too cold, I had good snorkeling off Poipu Beach and even if the sun was a little lacking I stayed warm enough as almost my whole body was underwater and I quiclkly became accomodated to the temperature (really not bad, just cooler than the pool-which I suspect is heated as it was warmer than the other, smaller pool farther back). So if it is overcast and you have kids, go out and swim-you can soak in the adjacent hot tub while the kids play in the water.
Other than that, not much to do with the kids when the weather is bad, so think twice about coming here with kids if their trip will be spoiled by a lack of sun. Kayaking is suppossed to be excellent, both on rivers and the ocean, but we didn't get a chance to do either due to weather and/or wrong season.

Marriott Waiohai Beach Resort

Great location right on Poipu Beach. Nice size suites. We liked it. As a timeshare it lacked some Hotel amenities one usually takes for granted, like daily maid service. One dollar for local phone calls. Bring your cell phone. I have Sprint and their towers were out of range, but I pay a few bucks a month for free roaming so it worked fine.

Pros:"central location, weather better than most of island"
Cons:"Weather"
In A Nutshell:"Kauai great if sun isn't of ultimate importance"
