One of the cities which escaped major damage during World War II, Regensburg, one of Europe's best-preserved medieval cities and the oldest city along the Danube. Founded by Marcus Aurelius, more than 2,000 years ago. Arriving by boat, you can't miss the ancient Stone Bridge across the Danube with its 16 curving arches constructed in the 12th century, and St. Peter's Cathedral with its single remaining romanesque tower around which the new gothic cathedral was constructed. Near the old stone bridge is the oldest riverside restaurant in town serving sausages since the 1300s.
The old city is full of surprises like architecture similar to that of Tuscany, the usual hustle and bustle of the streets tourist intermingling with the locals and students of the various universities.
Unique are the Roman and Gothic architecture which can be seen everywhere |
