Madeira

by bianchis - last update: Aug 16, 2007

We flew from Zurich with SATA airlines and it was a pleasant flight.
Arriving in the night offered a spectacular view of Funchal with all its lights. It took us only 20 minutes to arrived at our hotel which was halfway up to Monte so that from our room we could see almost all of the city. Surprising was the modern highway system with all its tunnels and bridges which offered quick transport to almost everywhere on the island. Amazing was the amount of new tunnels being built and the amount of new housing and hotel accomodations under construction

with the cable car to Monte (Teleferico)

Panoramic view of Funchal. On a clear day you can see quite far.
Note the roads and tunnels which link this mountainous island.

Aveida Arriaga

Have a coffee in one of the outdoor restaurants along this road and just watch the people walk by.
This wide two-lane Avenida Arria is also nice to walk along and the trees shade you from the scorching sun.
This avenue starts from Sé Cathedral and joins the Avenida Rotonda which leads into Avenida do Infante, via the Gardens and the Minicipal Theatre.

Women sell flowers along the way so making a colourful atmosphere with the "Bird of Paradise" lending a truly vibrant tropical note.

Pros:"warm temperatures the whole year round and the abundance of flowers growing everywhere"
Cons:"everywhere is either up or down and people with bad knees like mine have trouble walking up and down especially down but this was solely my problem"
In A Nutshell:"having heard so much about the beauty of this island I was not disappointed at all it was like everyone described beautiful and worth the visit"
