I guess a lot of people have a stopover in Singapore en route to somewhere much more exciting - in our case, New Zealand. How unfair this is to a fantastic place. We loved Singapore and on our next trip to NZ are planning to stop there for enough time to do it justice. We had an evening, night and then a whole day on our stopover and packed a load of great stuff in but we want to enjoy it all at a bit more leisure - especially as the climate doesn't make for rushing around.
In our day we used the Singapore Airlines hop-on bus and visited the wonderful Botanical Gardens, Little India, Chinatown and the Clarke Quay area. We used the clean and efficient MRT and made the most of our time at Changi airport after checking-in by having reflexology, wow.
We only had a day to get to know Singapore but will definitely be returning. This is a lively, cultural, exciting place that is a complete assault on the senses - the heat and humidity of course, but the smells are unbelievable.
A visit to the Botanical Gardens enveloped us in frangipani and jasmine, a walk around Little India hit us with spices and we could not get enough of the incense drifting from the temples.
Wow, wow, wow, we will be returning to Singapore and staying for a longer time - we want to get to know this place properly. And the people.....they are sooo friendly and helpful.
There are souvenirs and souvenirs, and it has to be said that a lot of what you see on your travels doesn't deserve house room.
But in Chinatown in Singapore we found this young lady painting on the inside of glass bead with the tiniest paint brush and the most steady hand.
Paperweights etc available but I bought my daughter a mobile phone charm with her name and date of birth painted inside the glass bead and decorated with pretty flowers, lovely, and a bargain at $8.
There is loads of accommodation in Singapore, to suit every budget and mostly within reach of all the attractions as Singapore is not a vast, sprawling city.
The MRT connects everywhere you might want to go and all the main hotels too.
It's a clean city and easy to get around so just choose a hotel or hostel and then enjoy the city 24 hours a day.
- Pros:An assault on the senses
- Cons:Pretty hot and humid
- In a nutshell:Wow, wow, wow

Hi Tissie, I have just joint Vt, what a great site. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay in my home country, did you managed to hire a wheelchair? I have been gone for a long time....
I lived here in the late 1960's and remember it being clean and friendly.
Gret tips, Lis. Singapore is great, is it not? I enjoyed my stay, but was far too short! A great destintion to return to. Thanks for bringing back fond memories.
