Outstanding scenery, friendly people We had a week in Yorkshire in April and don't know why we don't visit more often so we're off there again in October, this time taking advantage of a Sun newspaper special (a week's accommodation for £9 per person, based on four sharing - so, £38 for the two of us....how bad can it be?) Sounds like a bargain and we'll be self-catering in a 4-berth caravan on the coast south of Bridlington.
It's only a few hours from home, no flights involved, just a great trip on easy roads and crossing the river on the beautiful Humber Bridge (although the toll is now a steep £2.70).
There is loads to do, countryside, walking, towns and villages, steam trains, history, activities for children and families, canals, great food.... |

| | A Gardener's Delight The RHS garden Harlow Carr, just outside Harrogate, is one of my main targets when visiting North Yorkshire.
The gardens are not overwhelming massive, or impossible to envisage as your own, they are friendly and well worth a visit, or one every season of the year if you can manage it.
An added attraction is that the cafe at Harlow Carr is now Betty's - wow those infamous cakes and teas, a true delight. They also do beautiful lunches - you could stay there all day and miss the gardens completely if you had a mind - or just admire the plants through the windows of Betty's while pouring yourself another cup of tea.
There is a wonderful bookshop, a giftshop and of course a plant centre, so a trip to Harlow Carr necessitates and empty car boot and a flexible wallet. And don't miss the museum of garden history, a wonder of old tools - see if you can guess what they are all for. |
Discovering Captain James Cook With the home of Sir Joseph Banks being just down the road from where I live I have an interest in him and in Captain Cook and his various voyages.
In the village of Great Ayton (at the north-west extremes of the North York Moors) you can visit the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum, a building dating from 1785 and where Cook attended school from the age of 8 when his family moved to the village. Cook, of course, became an apprentice seaman (in Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast) and went of to join the Royal Navy, sail in the Endeavour to "discover" Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia.
Great Ayton is a lovely village and towering above it is Roseberry Topping. This hill is well worth the climb for spectacular views of the moors though I have to admit I didn't make it to the top on this occasion!! |

Thanks for pointing them out. |
