Things To Do: Ride a tuk-tuk!
  • Tip Rating:
  • A total must in any city in Thailand. The ones in Bangkok are definitely the best. Be prepared to speed, but to REALLY speed! They will take you anywhere in town, and the good thing is that they don't get stuck in traffic jams because they can ride where cars can't pass.
Ask the driver how much the ride to your destination will cost and be prepared to bargain, as they will try to rip you off! But remember to haggle with a smile on your face, you should never get angry!

Democracy Monument: On one of the main avenues
  • Tip Rating:
  • You will surely go past this monument many times in Bangkok. There are many pictures of the Royal family around it.

Shopping / Local Markets: Shop till you drop!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I didn't consider shopping in Thailand really spectacular, as these days I can get everything I saw in the markets at home. I guess 10 years ago it would have been a paradise to me, though. What I didn't like is that everything is factory-made, you won't find any sort of handcraft. Still, it's really worth getting lost in them as you can get good deals.
Bargaining is part of the experience, and it goes like this: you ask for the price, the seller will show you the price on a calculator screen and will hand it to you to type a lower price. After the second week you get a bit tired of this ritual every single time you want to buy something, but it's the way they do it there and it helps your wallet! :)

    Things To Do: Monks
  • Tip Rating:
  • Before travelling to Thailand, we read so many not-to-dos with monks! We read for example, that women can't talk to them directly, but through a man. Once we were in a wat (temple) and one of them came to talk to us. Some other time, we saw one of them smoking while enjoying the afternoon breeze. Maybe things have started to change!
You will see them early in the morning walking in the streets with a bag, collecting food and other everyday things from people.

Lumphini Park: Watch an aerobics class and relax
  • Tip Rating:
  • A very nice open space to walk before sunset, so that it's not so hot. At that time, you'll probably witness an aerobics class. Both men and women take part.
There are lots of pigeons to feed and trees where to sit under.
It's located right in downtown, surrounded by tall and modern office buildings.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Awesome architecture in just one spot
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bangkok Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew
  • Owe-inspiring architecture
  • by sabrina_florida
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Wat Phra Kaeo and the royal palace are located here, surrounded by white walls. It's so nice to see so many nice buildings in just one place. Take a close look at the details of the decorations, they are really impressive. The emerald buda is located in this wat.
You cannot go into the Royal Palace, you can only see it from outside.
You need to pay an entrance fee to access and your shoulders have to be covered to go into the temples. If they aren't, you'll be given a shirt before you go in.

    Wat Pho: Big lying budha
  • Tip Rating:
  • I'd say this is the most charateristic budha in Thailand. It's really massive, as it's as huge as the wat where it's located. It's one of the oldest temples in Bangkok. The statue is made of plaster but covered in gold sheets.

Floating Market: A bit of tradition
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bangkok Floating Market
  • My sister standing next to the
  • canal
  • by sabrina_florida

  • This one in particular was kind of touristy, there may be others which are not. But sitll, it was worth going. We found some good stuff to buy around the canal. Some of the boats that go along the canal are filled with tourists, others are paddled by local women who sell fruits and vegetables mostly. On both sides of the canal there are stalls selling the same stuff as in any market: bags, ornaments, hats, and so on.

    Ayuthaya-Old City: A day-trip
  • Tip Rating:
  • I spent a night here, but you can easily leave early in the morning from Bangkok and return after sunset, as it's only 80 kms away. This city hosts the ruins of the old capital city, which was burnt by the Burmans in 1767.
People who speak English here are almost non-existant, so be patient! :)
