zagreb is the capital of croatia, yet sadly is often overlooked because most people come to croatia for its beautiful dalmatian coast, and for other more 'picturesque' cities such as split and dubrovnik. yet to me, zagreb is a gem that should definitely be explored!
i think the reason i love zagreb so much is more of a personal nature. when i am here i am truly FREE. i feel kind of 'at home' amongst people that i am related to in origin, yet i do not have the constraints of family pressure and high expectation that i usually have when i visit my relatives on the dalmatian coast. here in zagreb i have NO relatives, which means no hassles, no stress... just the chance for me to explore the city and feel totally at ease. because trust me, when im visiting the coast, i never have any ME time because im constantly at somebody's house, getting force fed, and having my ear chewed off!
apart from this main reason, i also love zagreb for its cafe culture. it is here , on every corner, that you will come across cute cafe bars, teeming with people, who sit and enjoy a relaxing lifestyle. i can spend hours sitting in a small square in zagreb, drinking copious amounts of coffee (or red bull) and watching the passing parade of hot young things in their hot young clothes on their mobile phones. zagreb is a parade of people. highly fashionable, you will see all sorts here, always in their best garb.
add to this a beautiful old town, lovely parks, and magnificent buildings and architecture, and you can see why zagreb is a must visit.
after having been to zagreb 2 times already, it was on my 3rd, and most recent visit, that i discovered even more of this city and what had it had to offer. this was due to my VT friends, who welcomed me into this city, showed me their little spots, and taught me more about zagreb.
a huge THANK YOU must go to VT'er polardabar who let me stay at his house, and live with his family. it was the croatian homestay that i expected - generous beyond belief, always offering 'eat eat eat', and good old doileys on the table! haha!
also a big THANKS to other VT'ers croisbeauty, diocletianvs and nykaenan for taking the time in their busy schedules to meet up, show me around, and once again, FEED ME! hahaha :)) puno hvala!
oh, and i can't forget to add that i spent one day in zagreb hanging out with a fellow australian VT'er - craic. i always thought i'd end up bumping into her in perhaps sydney or canberra. didn't expect zagreb!

| a sticker on a zagreb pub wall! |
| | there are a few zagreb vt pages that i recommend you definitely check out before visiting, especially since these are pages from locals who know every nook and cranny of the city!
for an outstanding page on the 'newer' zagreb, where most of the locals live, and which few tourists will ever see, check out niksa's hudi bitek page.
for a page from a young guy, who has a love/hate relationship with his home city, and a very interesting way of putting it, check out polardabar's zagreb page.
the complete package, a huge page, filled with amazing photos and info, can be found on croisbeauty's zagreb page. it is definitely an awesome vt page!

I think Zagreb is a gem to explore too. Good job anyway. best wishes from Istanbul.Bora | JLBG Mon Sep 8, 2008 21:47 UTC I have not yet visited Zagreb but will some time do an "inland Croatia" tour that will for sure include Zagreb! Interesting to have a view on Zagreb by someone at the same time local and foreign! Different from the true locals view! It is a green city! |
