the isles of lewis & harris... also known as the outer hebrides.
the most western isles of scotland, these two joined landmasses that form one island are rugged, remote, and wild. from windswept beaches, to ancient stones, small villages, and untamed heath, the isle is just a magical place, and well worth the effort to get here.
on a good day, the place is perfect. on a wild rough wet day, the place is still perfect. you might feel wet and miserable at the time, but after, when you leave, you get a sense of just how steeped in history it is. you get a sense of the character of the people, how they work the land, how they make use of it in such wild conditions.
this is true scotland. islands and hills, wet weather one day, sunny the next. get out and about and see the history, the nature, and the people. it is well worth it. |

budapest8 Tue Nov 6, 2007 22:00 UTC So I see you like it rough..! Touching up the callanaish stones, climbing around Brochs, falling about in cemeteries. Sleeping in blackhouses.Sounds like it was a wet and windy trip, typical Scottish Hebridean weather. Did u see any kilt wearing lads? | roamer61 Thu Aug 2, 2007 14:22 UTC Having just been to Edinburgh and its immediate vicinity, your pages just proves there is much, much more to see and do in Scotland. | GuthrieColin Tue Apr 3, 2007 19:38 UTC Good Stuff Wonks, I remember hearing people speak Gaelic in Scottland to it's pretty wild.
