sir christopher wren's masterpiece, the dome of st paul's is a familiar landmark to the city of london. you will see it from most places around the city. it is a majestic building, and if you have the time and energy, you can climb to the top of the dome for awesome views over london.

it's all too easy to just visit the main entrance of st paul's, take a quick look and snap, and continue on your way. i should know, it took me my third visit to london to discover that walking all the way around the cathedral is worth it!!! there is so much to see behind st paul's, and around. the rear has beautiful gardens, with statues and monuments. it's a lovely place to see on a sunny day! definitely don't miss having a look around the whole of the cathedral, it's worth the extra steps!

an interesting feature of london is the contrast of old and new. it's weird to see these flashy new buildings beside the really really old. around st paul's cathedral and cheapside, this is most evident. little laneways with crumbling brick, and close by, new office blocks filled on the ground floor with trendy cafe's and shops. that's london life!

oh the stinky dirty yucky thames! not so much a must see activity, but it is highly likely you will see it some time during your tour of london.
to me, this place brings back memories. the year was 2002, and i was living in london. they found the body of a little african boy in the river who had been decapitated in some sort of ritual which they thought might of been voodoo. so me and my friends decide to go to the river and walk along and see if we could spot bodies (we were unemployed and bored). no, we didnt see any, but we saw a cat, lots of rubbish, and brown sludge.

the tower of london is one of the earliest buildings of the city. a fortress found on the thames, it's a wonderful imposing figure. tours run through where you can see how life was like back in the times, otherwise you can walk around the building yourself and get an idea of the structure like the gates, moats etc.
a word of advice: it gets sooo busy around here, as its very very tourist orientated. crowds lining up, kids screaming they are bored, people selling overpriced rubbish... it's tourist london at its finest.

tate modern is weird. plain out weird. well to me it is anyway. i just couldn't get into this modern art rubbish. i like my classics, those museums with brooding dark halls, huge paintings and the like. to me, a spider made of metal is not art. nor is someone spraying blood on canvas called art to me. but the building of tate itself is very impressive, it's an old powerstation. it is huge inside, very open and spacy, very funky! and alot of the modern art does make you question and think more then what you normally would. but most importantly, tate modern is FREE.
yes, FREE. great for us unemployed bums in the hostel, who would go to tate and spend hours staring at the bright neon line on the wall. so artistic darling!

another one of london's FREE places, and world class at that! the national gallery is amazing, with some of the world's famous paintings on display. i have spent many an hour wondering through here, viewing the masterpieces from artists like vermeer, titian and more. the museum shop is also a must see, selling many awesome books that you just can't find elsewhere. one of the world's great galleries, this is a gem of a place to spend some time on the cheap.
