located amongst the banana groves and lush jungle, the ancient mayan site of quirigua is a hidden and oft forgotten gem in the ruta maya trail.
this marvellous site is a UNESCO world heritage listed place, famed for having the tallest stelae in the known mayan world. (for those who don't know, a stelae is a monotholic stone monument, often carved with texts and heiroglyphics).
coming to quirigua is totally different to going to tikal or copan. there are barely any tourists around, since it is quite difficult to get here. the silence, apart from the cries of the jungle birds will leave you enjoying this place and itching to learn more. most importantly, the silence offers you the chance to totally 'connect' with the stelae, to check the carvings close up, without the jostle of people, to sit and reflect, and ask the question you will always ask when visiting mayan sites " who were the mayans?", "why did they just disappear?", "how did they create such masterpieces?".
i hope my quirigua page will get those of you who are exploring the mayan world to stop by and check it out. it's definitely a place worth stopping by, even if you are all "maya'ed out!" |
