| | San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico. It was founded by the Spanish colonists in 1521. Nowadays, San Juan is the center of Caribbean shipping and is the second largest sea port in the area (after New York City). The Old San Juan has narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings and numerous plazas and churches.
San Juan was used as a stop over for Spanish ships, making it an important port. This made the city target of different foreign attacks. A massive wall and fortifications were built around the city to protect the transportation of gold and silver from the New World to Europe from the enemy.
In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, United States troops bombed and occupied the city. That year the Spanish rule ended and the island became a territory of the United States. |
