The beautiful province of the Western Cape!

by Jenniflower - last update: Mar 28, 2007

The province that is most visited and exposed. A natural beauty!

From wide and expansive farmlands, to fertile winelands, rugged mountains and stunning, white sand beaches, this province has everything one might want on holiday, from the tourist-orientated outings, to off-the-beaten track events. It has the famous Table Mountain, part of the Garden Route (which includes Wilderness, George and Knysna), and the Wine Route (Franschoek and Stellenbosch areas).

I was born here (then went to Johannesburg), and then returned for 7 years, prior to moving to London. It has a special place in my heart as I had such a wonderful life there, mostly outdoors and nature-orientated.

It is a special peninsula, with a variety of cultures and colours, smells and nuances, is the gay capital of the country, and is a melting pot all on its own. A definite must if you are visiting South Africa!
There is a ton of things to do here, whether you enjoy shopping, seeing game, hiking, enjoy adrenalin sports, good food and entertainment.

(1) A favourite of mine is Boulders Beach (near Simons Town), with their comical little penguins. You can go up close to them here.

(2) Visit numerous beaches: Camps Bay, Clifton, Fish Hoek (although this has numerous shark sightings now), Blouberg and Noordhoek, to name a few.

(3) Visit Cape Point Nature Reserve and stand at the tip where the cold Atlantic and warm Indian oceans meet.

(4) Go on the cable car up Table Mountain and walk down. If you are feeling energetic, walk up too!
(5) Taste the delicious wines of local wine estates: Groot Constantia in the southern suburbs, or Stellenbosch/Franschoek for numerous wine estates.

(6) Go shark cage diving in Gans Baai/Bay or Mossel Baai/Bay

(7) Visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held captive for many years during the apartheid era

(8) Visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the most beautiful gardens n the world in my personal opinion

(9) There are various museums and galleries to visit in the Cape

(10) Travel up the west coast and visit Saldanha Bay...

(11) Visit Darling, home to Pieter Dirk Uys, South African satirist extraordinaire. The flowers here are gorgeous in spring time!

What a wonder you have created! Your love of your country is so evident, and your descriptions are astounding. Wine, cheese, beaches, animals, natural beauty abounds.
