Kwazulu Natal ~ an exotic mix!

by Jenniflower - last update: Jun 12, 2007

Kwa-Zulu Natal ~ 1940s
Located on the South East coast of South Africa, Kwa-Zulu Natal is a lush and fertile landscape, with gorgeous beaches, excellent surf spots, superb hiking trails, arty routes, Boer War battlefields and a rich and diverse culture. The coast is wild and brash, beach sand brown and plentiful. Ethnic groups of all kinds live in this region, predominant are the Zulu people, Caucasians and Indian people.

A well-known and internationally supported event – the Comrades Marathon – takes place here every year. It is the longest marathon in the world, and is eagerly watched by most South Africans and the rest of the world. We have known some people who have taken part in it and it is extremely gruelling.

Quite an achievement! :)

The photos here are snapshots of my great uncle (Gruncle), when he was stationed in South Africa in the 1940s. I love looking through his photographs, marvelling at all the changes and also the lack of change, and how South Africa has moved on since then.

Lovely to see the old photos alongside the new. Your leopard painting is beautiful, & I enjoyed seeing the sharks from this safe distance ;)
