Off The Beaten Path: Caves in South Africa!

There are some superb caves in South Africa - from easy access caves to adventure caves, where you are in deep tunnels, which may be partially filled with water etc. ALWAYS have a guide when caving. Accidents happen so easily. My own brother in law had a bad caving accident in 2008 (where he smashed his camera, but he got off lightly as his foot got caught!), but he was with friends so they could raise the alarm. NEVER go alone.I have been in Kalk Bay Caves, Fish Hoek cave (Piers Cave), Cango Caves (Oudtshoorn), Sterkfonten Caves and Sudwala Caves (Mpumalanga) thus far.

There is something for everyone in South Africa, and wherever you are, you are never too far from nature. Lakes, rivers, mountains, caves, beaches, winelands etc. South Africa has an abundant and rich vegetation and exploration always brings one into contact with something new, even if you've done that route before.

Off The Beaten Path: Fly or drive from Cape Town to Windhoek?

It is a long drive and you need to allot enough time for it... there are some beautiful areas along the way, like Namaqualand during the flower season. The terrain is vastly different to the Cape's... far less green and mountainous etc. I would fly from the Cape to Windhoek. It would be a shame to *fly* through the West Coast of South Africa in a car. I would do this drive in a week.

Great page !!! | Nemorino Sun Mar 29, 2009 13:50 UTC Thanks for the virtual tour of your home country! I have been there twice, theoretically, but only to change planes at Johannesburg Airport on our way to and from Maputo. So I haven't really seen anything of SA yet. |
