The wooden shoe has been worn since the Dark Ages throughout Europe (news to me, I only thought the Dutch wore them!). People still wear wooden shoes in Holland because of the swampy ground, and also because there is an ample amount of the wood needed to manufacture them (willows and poplars). ~ The orthopedic shape of the wooden shoe - 'clog' - supports your feet very well ~ They are hygienic. The wood absorbs sweat ~ Wooden shoes are safe as the hard wood provides good protection Dutch wooden shoes are recognised all over the world and make an excellent gift.

TheWanderingCamel Fri May 15, 2009 09:16 UTC 5 days in Amsterdam coming up - Vermeer at the top of my list but will take your tip about the hop on hop off canal cruise - sounds a good way to spend a day. Thanks - L | titabell Sun Apr 5, 2009 09:46 UTC Hi Jenn! Wonderful tips on Amsterdam. My son is going there with his friends next month and I had to remind him of the warnings and dangers using your tip. Thanks. | balhannah Tue Mar 24, 2009 10:20 UTC Will be visiting Amsterdam soon. Hope you enjoy Adelaide, a lovely city. The Adelaide Hills are very pretty, worth hiring a car and driving around. Enjoy your visit. | HORSCHECK Sun Feb 24, 2008 15:50 UTC Jenny, fabulous page about Amsterdam. Can you believe that I have never been to this interesting city although it is so close to where I live. Interesting to read that you as a South Afrcian are able to understand the Dutch people. |
