Getting TO/AROUND: MAD MAD MAD!!!!!!!!! For those who arent used to cyclists on the pavement (usually this is for pedestrians...), you learn pretty quickly in Amsterdam haha. On the way to our hotel we were nearlly mowed down twice. The road was full of cars, the pavement had bikes, and there was really nowhere else we could walk! The pavement was thin and so bikes and people couldnt safely walk/cycle alongside one another. So we learnt pretty quickly who has right of way, and to jump out of the way. We were very aware of this our whole stay there, keeping the ears peeled for the sign of an urgent bicycle bell! Quite a few companies offer bicycle rentals for around ?8 per day with discounts for longer rentals.

Getting TO/AROUND: It doesnt have to be a specific tour eg. Museum tour or romantic night cruise. The ordinary cruises are possibly the best ones to go on. They cost less and are less rigid as to where they stop it seems. It is a lovely past-time to sit on the boat, watching life go by you on the banks .. and the same for them too! haha It must be interesting to see all these tourists gawking at them from the boat! ;)

Getting TO/AROUND: Hmm... now look closely at this tram and tell me why I have photographed this one specifically?? hahaha it has the South African flag on it!!! Woohoo! Tourism is everywhere isnt it? Trams are the easiest way to get around Amsterdam it seems, (although not as picturesque as the canals) and run regularly until 12:15 am. When you come out of Centraal Station, they are right there, you just have to see what lane you want (the numbers are on poles alongside the lanes). People criss cross across the tram lines freely, and the trams are on the go all the time, I am surprised they dont have accidents quite often. It can be quite confusing when you first get there.

Getting TO/AROUND: The Canal Bus runs every 40 minutes or so from early till late, throughout the city. Day passes cost you 16 euros and are valid until 12:00 the following day. As mentioned before in other tips, this is really the favoured way to view this city of delights around every corner. From the bridges to the buildings and fantastic architecture, to the intimate glimpse into other people's live as they go about their daily business.

TheWanderingCamel Fri May 15, 2009 09:16 UTC 5 days in Amsterdam coming up - Vermeer at the top of my list but will take your tip about the hop on hop off canal cruise - sounds a good way to spend a day. Thanks - L | titabell Sun Apr 5, 2009 09:46 UTC Hi Jenn! Wonderful tips on Amsterdam. My son is going there with his friends next month and I had to remind him of the warnings and dangers using your tip. Thanks. | balhannah Tue Mar 24, 2009 10:20 UTC Will be visiting Amsterdam soon. Hope you enjoy Adelaide, a lovely city. The Adelaide Hills are very pretty, worth hiring a car and driving around. Enjoy your visit. | HORSCHECK Sun Feb 24, 2008 15:50 UTC Jenny, fabulous page about Amsterdam. Can you believe that I have never been to this interesting city although it is so close to where I live. Interesting to read that you as a South Afrcian are able to understand the Dutch people. |
