Ithaca: Fish Hoek beach apartment - self catering
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A two minute walk from the beautiful and family-friendly Fish Hoek beach, this tastefully furnished self catering apartment is fully equipped, spotless, and can cater for up to 4 people (6 at a push if you have kids!)

    Accommodation & Facilities
    - spacious living area
    - 8 seater dining area
    - separate, fully equipped kitchen
    - 1 huge double bedroom
    - 1 good size twin bedroom
    - 1 bathroom
    - large balcony
    - tv and portable CD radio
    - ample storage throughout
    - own garage and off-street parking
    - common parts area maintained daily (by a really friendly chap called Douglas!)

The main bedroom is extemely large, the second a good size too. The kitchen and bathroom have been retiled recently and has everything you will need. The apartment is spotless, has good quality furnishings and is very comfortable.

It feels like home from home, not impersonal like a hotel. I wouldn't say it is luxurious, but very comfortable, bright, airy and homely and the best nights sleep I have ever had! (Hearing the waves crashing on the beach help with that too! lol).

Although smart bathroom towels are supplied, it's best to bring your own beach towel.

Unique Qualities: Situated in a valley between the warm Indian Ocean and the cold Atlantic Ocean, in the well established residential village of Fish Hoek, it is an ideal location for those planning to visit Cape Point, Table Mountain National Park, the Cape Winelands, Simon's Town - South Africa's naval base, is literally just around the corner, with it's unique architecture, history and tours. Central Cape Town, Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Stellenbosch Wine Route and The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront are all within a radius of 35 minutes by road.

A laundrette is about a minute walk away, a car rental shop, tourism office and a surf rental shop are literally downstairs, and many restaurants and other shops are close at hand within a 2 to 5 minute walk.

Whether you yearn for some peace, quiet and relaxation, or enjoy being a busy tourist, Ithaca is the perfect place.

The price guide shown below is per day (not per person). Quotes are given on enquiry and are based on the amount of people visiting and the season (high or low).

  • We got married in a stone chapel in the forest, and had our reception at Hout Bay Manor. We had a perfect day, where everything ran smoothly, thanks to the Manor staff. The service, food and accommodation is excellent here. We could not fault them at all

Unique Qualities: Nestled at the foot of the Constantiaberg Mountains, this historic Manor was built in 1871. A National Monument, it has recently been restored to its traditional Cape Colonial Heritage.

Mount Nelson Hotel: The Nellie ~ Historic Mount Nelson   Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • My all-time favourite, and the world’s number one hotel for a couple of years running:~ The Nellie.

The first thing you notice is its colour. It’s pink! Haha. Don’t let that put you off though, this is THE most superb 5 star hotel you could possibly stay in.

The one crucial thing that separates this hotel from other 5 star hotels in Cape Town (and there are quite a few!), is that this one is old-world, coupled with modern convenience and facilities. Other hotels have all the mod cons and ooze sophistication and have world class standards, don’t get me wrong, but The Nellie has the added comfort and warmth. Personal attention.

Even as a mere supplier, I always enjoyed going there, I would be offered tea (free 5 star tea!!!!) in the front room (BEAUUUTIFUL sun room!), in the same area as the guests, to go through the latest proposals etc. It has such a warm and welcoming feel, and not only because you are spending your money there!

Many people have their weddings here, and they host a variety of corporate and private functions too. As a supplier of gifting to this hotel I supplied gifts for their rooms, Christmas crackers plus invitations and menus for occasions.

The impressive colonial architecture with grand ballrooms and receptions lends itself well in the way of entertainment.

Unique Qualities: The one occasion that I am most proud of is the when Nelson Mandela had his 79th birthday there in 1998 and I was asked by the then general manager of the Nellie to do his birthday invites for him, as he was having a big party at the hotel.

I did the outer leaves of paper in a thick and rustic handmade paper I specifically made for Mandela, with his name just visible in the pulp here and there. Took some experimenting, but the end result was fabulous! The inside was left blank for security reasons, Mandela's PA was putting the info and guests name etc inside.

So yes, all my memories of this hotel are ones of fondness and warmth. Highly recommended! :)

Variety of places: Cheap accommodation in Cape Town
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • You will need budget accommodation if you have a small budget for Cape Town - incl petrol, food, sight seeing etc!

Self catering is probably the way to go, but you might find an inexpensive B&B.. it is not likely though to find an ultra-cheap, as Cape Town is such a popular area most of the year.

www.sleeping-out.co.za is quite good, as is Rooms For Africa, here is a link to the accommodation there.
