Cape Point: Where do the two oceans actually meet?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cape Town Cape Point
  • Cape Point Nature Reserve
  • by Jenniflower
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Favorite Thing: I am not sure why the restaurant at Cape Point is called 'Two Oceans'... as this is NOT where the two oceans of the Atlantic and Indian meet, so why they market this area as such I do not know!

The two oceans actually meet at Cape Agulhus.

Fondest Memory: This is a lovely Nature Reserve though and well worth a trip. The flora and fauna are amazing... just dont feed the baboons! You might take on more than you bargained for!

Beaches: Fish Hoek is a ‘dry’ town
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cape Town Beaches
  • The only 'dry' village in South
  • Africa
  • by Jenniflower

  • Favorite Thing: By tradition, no retail liquor outlets are allowed in Fish Hoek – it’s a convention that dates back to the days when the village was a staging post for the wagons that carried goods between Cape Town and Simon’s Town.

The by-law was introduced to prevent drivers from stopping off for a dram (…or two… or three) and arriving at their destinations in less than a sober state.

Alcohol is served at the numerous restaurants in Fish Hoek, but there are no liquor stores. You will have to travel 5 mins by car to Kalk Bay or Long Beach Mall for that!

    General Tips: Fresh food guaranteed
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: South African food is mostly of the highest quality. Meat, fruit and shellfish such as crayfish (rock lobster) and perlemoen (abelone) are found in the finest restaurants, as well as on the tables of homes.

A tip for the freshest fish possible... go down to the harbour and haggle with the local fisherman there for some fish! We usually go to either Hot Bay or Kalk Bay harbour. They come in on their little fishing boats with their fresh catch. Best to get down to the harbour by at least 7am.

Fondest Memory: Eating freshly caught and cooked lobster at Kommetjie Beach watching the sun disappear on the horizon of the sea.

General Tips: The lay of the land
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: South Africa is made up of 9 provinces, some small, some large, with the 2 small countries of Swaziland and Lesotho landlocked within it's borders. The smallest province, Gauteng, is the most productive of all provinces in South Africa.

The Western Cape is the most visited province overall by travellers and tourists from around the world. Fondly known as the 'fairest Cape' by the locals, it's charm and beauty is world renowned, Cape Town itself being a favourite destination.

    Table Mountain: The white tablecloth
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cape Town Table Mountain
  • The table with her cloth...
  • by Jenniflower
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Favorite Thing: Table Mountain is famous for its 'Table cloth' - a thin, white and whispy cloud formation that flows effortesly over the top like a waterfall, only to disappear into thin air halfway down the slope. Legend and myths abound... most saying that a retired pirate, on climbing this flat-topped mountain, met up with the devil himself! Trying to protect his soul, and feeling desperate, the pirate challenged the devil to a smoking competition. They then stoked up their wooden pipes and have been smoking ever since! haha A quaint tale indeed :)

The scientific (and more boring!) explanation is that the summer anti-cyclones bring warm, moist air up from the south, which then condenses to form a white cloud layer on the much cooler mountain top, which then spills over the city side to only disperse at the warmer, lower altitude. Quite something hey?
