Ruins of Philippi and Kavala

by Jenniflower - last update: Mar 6, 2005

The ferry btwn the islands
Our main reason for coming across to Macedonia from Thassos Island was to visit Kavala and the ruins of Philippi.

We took a ferry from the island across to Macedonia, and went on a tour of the ruins. The architecture and design of the ruins is magnificent.

Everyone was really delighted and enjoyed the trip (albeit the temp being 38 degrees C!), but what really touched us was the knowledge that we were walking where Paul walked. Where he preached. Where he was imprisoned.
Basilica B, 540 AD. Ruins of Philippi

To think this all used to be swampland!

99% of the city of Phillipi was under a swamp until it was drained. The only protruding parts of the ruins were the highest points of the Basilica. When the swamp was drained the city below was revealed. What an awesome discovery! They have started restoration, and it’s coming along well, but most of it is still in ruin. We wanted to spend much longer there and take in everything, but had to stay with the tour group. We would love to go back some day.

You can read more about these ruins on our Philippi page :)

Kavala

An ancient city on the shore.

We enjoyed the old part of the city tremendously, but not the new part at all. We were disappointed as the tour operator (one of the reasons we HATE doing organised day trips) raved about how beautiful Kavala is, and we thought it was nothing special.

You can read more about our Kavala visit on our Kavala page :)

Great introduction on Thassos island, jennifer (and the rest of the prefecture of course). I went there last year for the first time and loved it. I was very surprised because it is not advertised or well known, which as you said suits me fine!
