I thought I should mention that the hotel rooms in Paris are generally VERY small. You enter a small foyer, go to the small reception, get your key, get into the small lift, walk down the small corridor, and walk into your small room. Our bathroom was such that you could shower and go to the loo simultaneously! Okay, granted, it was only a two star... but it was a little ridiculous. When we came to London after South Africa, we thought there was a lack of space... Paris is even worse. But then... the idea is to GO OUT and have fun!!! There is so much to see and do. You only need your small pillow to rest your weary head at the end of your day ;)

Don't laugh at this little piece of advice, but when walking in Paris, look down, not up! Dog excrement is still one of the city's major problems, with no solution in sight. So until one is found, watch out for your shoes!

Paris is a relatively safe city although it has the usual problem of pickpockets targeting tourists. Take particular care on escalators and in métro stations. Emergency numbers are 17 for police, 15 for medical emergencies and 18 for the fire brigade. There are reciprocal health agreements with the UK, so don't forget your E111 form.

Should you happen to see everyone suddenly up and leaving a metro station following an announcement in French on the PA system, chances are you are witnessing one of their periodic strikes (or greves)!!! Once you are out, you will have to find an alternative to the tube. Thankfully Paris is a walker-friendly city! :)

tiabunna Wed Apr 1, 2009 04:22 UTC I'm a sucker for good Paris VT pages and enjoyed visiting - though I'll have to return some time later to complete the trip. Like you, cities aren't usually my thing, but Paris is a worthy exception. | a5floor Thu Mar 26, 2009 12:00 UTC Good to hear you had a great time at Disneyland. :) Hopefully I can go there as well this year. | vinc_bilb Mon Jun 9, 2008 13:29 UTC Thanks for your very good pages and tips. No-smoking in public arrays (restaurants, transportation, ...) has improved a lot (new rule till 2008) and is now effective and not so ignored (money penalties)... So, should be better next time :) | Jeannette1 Sat Mar 22, 2008 03:13 UTC Sounds like you had a good time in Paris, except for the hotel :-). I love that photo of the 3 nuns. I have one in the same style on my Venice page: 2 nuns on a vaporetto ! |
