Cataratas de Iquazu

I had heard that National Park de Iquazu was the Niagra Falls of South America and was a must see during my stay in Agrentina. After visiting the falls, my opinion is that this comparison is an understatement.

The trip began from Buenos Aires on 'Crucero del Norte', one of two bus services that I have first hand experience and recommend. The journey from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazu takes 16 hours. Economy class is called 'semi-cama'. I recommend 'cama' or 'super-cama' seating as they are comparable to Business and First Class seating on airlines. Book 3-5 days in advance of your travel as these seats fill quickly. Food and beverage service are included.

Brazil or Argentina?

I often hear travelers ask which side of the falls is better to visit. Brazil or Argentina. My answer; "both sides."

From Brazil you will see the falls from a distance and get the panoramic experience. From Argentina, you will be swallowed by the jungle via numerous foot paths and immersed in the beauty, sound, and fury of the falls.

Allow yourself at least two complete days for visiting the falls. One day in Brazil and the other in Argentina.

In Parque Nacional do Iquacu (Brazil) you will ride a double decker bus to the beginning of the foot path. In Parque Nacional de Iguzu (Argentina) there is a train which will transport visitors to various locations in the park.

Where to stay?

I stayed in Puerto Iquazu, within walking distance of shopping, restaurants, and a pleasant night-life. I recommend the Secret Garden for those who want a touch of class for a reasonable price without the glitz of big hotels. There are also numerous hotels and hostels from which to choose and even some camping options.

If you want to stay in the park, I recommend you stay on the Brazilian side as their hotel is beautifully constructed in colonial style and is situated at the beginning of the foot path. I found the hotel on the Argentine side of the park to be in stark contrast to the natural environment.

For lack of a better description, I found it to be an embarrassing eye-sore, particularly when viewed from the Brazilian side and wonder why the government would approve such a ghastly design.

Come on Sheraton, at least paint the exterior green in keeping with surrounding trees and plants.
