The name of this temple means "the great temple of victory" and gets its name from when one of the great kings of the past defeated Burmese troops in 1593. This temple features a massive reclining buddha, as well as many other buddhas surrounding it. There are a number of Chedi's also in the vacinity and many buddhist people come here, as it was considered a very holy place by a set of buddhists who used the site as a place of meditation and insight.

This was once a royal thai monastary, and a Wat where the king and his desendants would perform religious rites. In the past it has also been used as a cremetation site for princes and princesses of the past. In 1767, when the burmese invaded, this Wat became an arny camp, and was eventually abandoned when Ayutthaya fell. Conservation of the Wat began about 20 years ago and was finnished in '92. From the looks of it, it is one of Ayutthayas most impressive temples.

This temple features a number of Chedi's and in each of them has the remains of one of the past great kings of Ayutthaya. This temple is one of the more ruined places and is interesting to walk around to see how much damage was actually caused by the war with burma.

This is one of the temples which was looted after the burmese invaded Ayutthaya, and through the looting many items were stolen. Throughout the remains, you can see many buddha statues with no heads. This is because it was believed that inside the heads, gold was kept, whether this is true is unknown. This temple, has been built and rebuilt many times during Ayutthaya's history...The highest and main prang (Khmer style tower), calapsed between 1610 and 1628 and then was restored when the next king came to power. He also made it taller. This Wat was made to hold an unusual Buddha image, made of green stone, which depicts buddha sitting on a throne..this was later moved to Wat Naphrameru.

This Buddha head has many stories related to it. You can find it in Wat Mahathat, and many believe that a theif tried to rob it from the temple, but due to its imense weight, the theif grew tired, and had to leave it on the floor, where the tree ate it, to prevent it from being stolen again........ not sure if thats true or not, but its a nice thing to believe....

According to my thai friend whom i was travelling through Ayutthaya with, this temple holds one of the oldest buddha images in thailand. It was originally constructed during the reign of kind Ramadhibodi II, the tenth king of the Ayutthaya dynasty and was used to sign a peace treaty between burma and siam.

Well, as most people walk straight into the actual temple to view the buddha i thought i would add a tip to walk around the temple as well as in it. I love the way the Thai's decorate, even the smallest of chedis, even though the roots in the chedi make it so much more interesting than the cloths...

This was restored around 1955 and is situated right next to Wat Phra Si Sanphet, and is very similar to the modern thai temples. The Queen of Thailand, donated a lot of money towards the restoration of it.

There isnt much to look at here but its what used to guard Ayutthaya from invaders via boat. Originally built of wood this fortress guarded the city for hundreds of years. It was later rebuilt using brick and cement. It was also a haven for boats to drop anchors who came for trading purposes.
