Restaurant Name: The Pancake Bakery
The Pancake Bakery, a famous restaurant in Amsterdam, was one of our favorite eating spots during our visit. We saw a lot of the area trying to find it the first time, before we learned how the canal street building numbering worked. It's at Prinsengracht 191. "Gracht" is Dutch for canal, so any street address with that in the name is a canal street, with a separate street and sidewalk on both sides of the canal. Same as in the U.S., building numbers are odd-numbered on one side and even on the other, but not necessarily corresponding from one side to the other. If not aware of this you can easily walk in the wrong direction. Picture the numbering starting from opposite ends of the street on each side and this will make sense. It's a short walk down the street from the Anne Frank House museum, and convenient to tie that in with a visit there.
As with many other Amsterdam restaurants and buildings in general, the very small size when facing it from the street made it at first seem like a hole-in-the-wall sort of place, but as we became accustomed to, was larger inside than expected due to the depth of the interior. Watch your head on the way out. I got my first of two noggin bumps there!
Some of the friendliest staff we encountered anywhere, and a very nice mix of other people both times we went.
Favorite Dish: We went expecting U.S. style flapjacks as pancakes. Wrong again, but pleasantly surprised once we tried them. More of a French style crepe, but delicious, very large, and with a mouth-watering variety of toppings. Also some very good omelettes.

Majestic: Convenient eats on Dam Square

Restaurant Name: the Majestic
This restaurant had more the feel of a U.S. style eatery or bar than the canal house type local ones. Partly due to its size and also the interior ambience and decor. A good spot for breakfast before starting a day's adventures, but also open for and serving lunch and dinner and with a bar area as well. Located just to the right and around the first leg of the square when exiting the front of the Krasnapolsky hotel. Nice outside sitting area to people-watch and have a bite or a drink in decent weather.
Favorite Dish: Pretty much something for everyone here, with three main breakfast choices of American, English, and French styles, with individual items available as well. I had read a bit about people's experiences when visiting this city with what they perceived as undercooked bacon with a breakfast meal compared to what they were used to, and I would have to agree. Picture it just sorta warmed up rather than cooked, and in our case remained uneaten. Don't let that put you off, though. Everything else was fine, and their croissants were especially delicious.

Restaurant Name: Three Sisters Amsterdam
We ate lunch at this restaurant/bar one day when visiting the Leidseplein area, the Three Sisters Amsterdam. Really nice interior with a lot of wood, tasteful decorations, and a classy yet laid-back atmosphere. Very comfortable place with a nice seating arrangement that allows for more privacy than many Amsterdam restaurants, and more spacious as well. Small seating areas near the entrance, with some welcome heat on a cold day, that allowed for people-watching while having lunch. The main areas on into the restaurant are quite nice. I read somewhere that there's a killer steakhouse section upstairs, but we never made it that far.
Friendlier staff and service than at some places we visited. Dinner is served, also. We could picture how great it would be in the Summer months, with assumed outdoor cafe style seating, and just a stone's throw from the main plaza of the Leidseplein and the American Hotel. Highly recommended based on our one visit. We would have gone back, but other areas of the city beckoned. Be aware that there is more than one Amsterdam restaurant with "Sisters" in the name, and can be a bit confusing if doing a search.
Favorite Dish: Only ate a light lunch there the one day, very good Tostis (grilled sandwiches) and cold beer.

San Cirillo: Small place, good food

Restaurant Name: Cirillo
This was, fittingly enough, the first restaurant we ate at in Amsterdam and also the last one the night before we left. We happened upon it around lunchtime the Saturday we arrived, after checking into our hotel and while cold, tired, hungry...dazed & confused, as the song says. We were looking for anything decent close to Dam Square for a quick lunch before crashing at our apartment and recovering from the flight over. Having not a clue as to where to go, we just started walking down Damstraat, totally unadjusted to our new and bustling environment, and happened upon it. Just a short walk from the Dam, on your right. Look for the colorful pizzeria style name and other lettering on the front windows. A small place, nothing fancy at all and easy to just pass by, but very good food and an extremely polite staff. If memory serves, the Damstraat changed to another street name, but at any rate we just walked straight down it from the square.
Favorite Dish: Mainly Italian fare. The onion soup at lunch was perfect at the time, and their pizza and lasagna al forno for our quickie farewell dinner was very good as well.

Casa Di David: Very good Italian restaurant

Restaurant Name: Casa di David
Casa di David was a VERY fine Italian restaurant that we had dinner at one evening. Romantic and typically Italian decor, with dark paneling, red and white checked tablecloths, and wine casks, combined with the look and feel of an old wood-beamed Amsterdam canal house. There are two floors, but we did not see the upstairs area. If you like Italian, I would try this one for sure. It shows up on a lot of Internet searches for Amsterdam restaurants, and we had it on our to-visit list.
Favorite Dish: Freshly made pastas and pizza for one baked in wood-fired ovens, with some excellent wine. Close your eyes and you're in Italy.

pinkcamel Sun Jun 18, 2006 06:53 UTC This is going to sound weird but you decide whether you have things to declare or not. If not, you can go through the 'green' exit'. You may be pulled over by customs officials who think you look dodgy or suspect, but mostly, you can walk straight out. | Pavlik_NL Sun Jan 16, 2005 16:13 UTC Good tips & nice pages. Amsterdam is indeed a strange place, but I hope that NL & A'dam never become a police-state. Safety should come from preventing things happening to yourself, not from being protected. That's what the Dutch tolerance is all about. | scottishvisitor Fri Dec 31, 2004 22:20 UTC Good page with great tips & info Greetings from Scotland & Happy New Year | Xefian Wed Dec 29, 2004 12:16 UTC Great page ,enjoyed tips and travelogue |
