Utrecht - a very nice side trip from Amsterdam My wife and I visited Utrecht when on a trip to The Netherlands. It is a charming little city, sort of a smaller version of Amsterdam without the vehicle traffic, crowds, and general congestion. A nice way to get away from the bigger city hustle and bustle. There are no trams here as in Amsterdam, but it's a small enough town that from the central train station you can walk to its center within a few minutes, and experience the sights, shops, and restaurants on foot. It has canals, but they are different from the ones in Amsterdam in that they have lower levels that house shops, businesses, and so forth with walkways right next to the water. There is at least one canal tour boat company, not sure of others, and provided a nice feel for the city from the water during a tour we took.
The Damtoren church and tower is central to the city, a beautiful place to visit, and is I believe the tallest church tower in The Netherlands. |
