The Only Bridge over the Atlantic Unless you're a true Viking and decide to swim from Streymoy to Eysturoy, you'll undoubtedly cross the only bridge over the Atlantic to get there. Now ain't that cute? Sadly, I didn't explore as much of this island as I would have liked.. My nicest days (weather-wise) were spent on Eysturoy, which may have something to do with the northern part of E. being my favorite place in the Faroes. |
Sights and Sounds There are several significant places to visit in the northern half of Eysturoy. One, is that the highest peak in the Faroes is here. The other, along the path from Eidi to Gjógv, is "Risin and Kellingin" (="The Giant and the Witch), two sea stacks with an interesting legend behind them.. I explored neither of these, however. |
Eidi - Gjógv - Funningur I hitch-hiked from Streymoy to Eidi, and then from Eidi to Gjógv, and walked the way from Gjógv to Funningur. There's lots of hiking to be done in this area and the road from Eidi to Gjógv is one of the most spectacular expanses of scenery I've seen. Eidi is a wee hamlet propped up on a hillside, overlooking a good part of northern Streymoy. If you walk through the town, keep walking, and there is a beautiful (though short) hike awaiting you. Gjógv, pronounced "Chekf" (more or less) is one of the quaintest, most idyllic little towns on this planet. There's not much here besides the potentially endless hours spent exploring the area surrounding Gjogv - but this ridiculously cute town, with a Guesthouse, even a cafe, is a nice refuge after a day of hiking. Funningur is small and cute with a great view of the long, lonely isle of Kalsoy. I have this vague memory of some old man smiling at me as I took the picture that's on my main Faroes page, which may not seem that significant. But the fact is is that, in contrast to other itty bitty townsfolk I've visited (and the Faroes is really nothing BUT itty bitty towns), the Faroese itty bitty towns-folk never give you that "wicked-foreigner-get-out-of-my- precious-town-or-I'll-call-a-town-meeting-to-have-you-stoned" look. |
