"The City That Never Sleeps, Yet is Always Changing" New York City by sswagner

New York is widely accepted as America's premier city. It might not be attractive as some cities, and perhaps Los Angeles will one day overtake it in population. Yet, no other city can ever represent America the way that New York can. This is the gateway to America, and that is one of many reasons why the city receives so much attention.

New York itself is a symbol of America, yet it has many symbols in itself. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of that "Golden Door" to America. Ellis Island perhaps symbolizes a gateway to an American Dream for some. The Empire State Building is in itself a symbol of the city's strength. Wall Street represents just how financially critical New York is to the nation. Times Square is one of the cultural hearts of the city. Let's face it, all eyes are on this city.

Although the skyline is always changing (for good or for bad), I doubt that the city's importance to this country will ever change. New York is always in the news. It could be something as terrible as the events of September 11, or it could be the anticipation of the country waiting for that ball to drop in Times Square on New Years Eve. There is always something going on here, and there is always something to see.

New York City is often the first place that a visitor to the United States will see. While there is definitely much more to America than just one city, I cannot deny that New York is an excellent choice for a visit. If you live in America and have decided to visit the city for the first time, you will see why it is "the melting pot" for America. Here, cultures from all over the world have established a presence.

By all means come and visit New York City. It has something for everyone and should be seen at least once. Of course, I decided to see it more than just one time. You will find many things that you expected, yet there will be things that will also surprise you. This is certainly one place where you can see the pulse of an entire country.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Well suited to tourism. There is a great deal to see here.
  • Cons:It is a very big and congested city--does this surprise anyone?
  • In a nutshell:New York City is certainly popular. Look at all of the attention it gets on VT and elsewhere.
