"Steeped in History" Vicksburg by sswagner

Sometimes, it seems Vicksburg does not receive the attention that it should. We all know of great cities on the Mississippi River such as New Orleans, Memphis, and St. Louis. In the state that bears the name of the mighty river, Vicksburg is perhaps one of Mississippi's most attractive and interesting cities. There are nice views of the river, historic homes and buildings, and riverboat gambling for those who are interested.

Many people have heard of the Battle of Gettysburg. Yet, at the exact same time that that battle was being fought, the Union finally won the Seige of Vicksburg, which gave the North control over the Mississippi River and in turn, split the Confederacy in half.

Vicksburg is conveniently located off of I-20, which is a main interstate highway running through the southern states. It is roughly the halfway point between Dallas and Atlanta.

• In a nutshell:Vicksburg is an excellent stop on a roadtrip.
