KGB Headquarters - Moscow

KGB Headquarters

KGB Headquarters KGB Headquarters Lubyanka Review

Growing up and through high school, we were taught that this was a place to be afraid of. Now, tourists are coming to see the building that served the former KGB. Even President Putin was a member of this organization. It was interesting to see a place that was our rival across the world.

Bolshoy Theater - Moscow

Bolshoy Theater

Bolshoy Theater Bolshoi Theatre Review

Fans of the arts will enjoy the experience that this place has to offer. It is no secret that Russia has an immense background in literature, music, and theatrical arts, especially the ballet. We stopped by just long enough to get a look at the building. It is certainly a grand structure.

A Faberge egg - Moscow

A Faberge egg

The Kremlin: Armory Kremlin Review

A ticket into here is in addition to the regular ticket onto the grounds of the Kremlin, however it is certainly worth it. Inside, you will find treasures dating back to the times of the tsars. You can see religious items, coaches, Russian dress, and some of those priceless Faberge eggs--yes, those eggs. I paid a little more for the right to take photos. This is a fine museum. Because of the nature of the items inside, I recommend an early start here if this is to be part of your Moscow itenerary. What a fascinating place this was!

Inside the Kremlin from the main entrance - Moscow

Inside the Kremlin from the main entrance

The Kremlin: The grounds Kremlin Review

This huge walled fortress is the center of the city. Everything seems to radiate out from it. Naturally, it should be the hub since it is the seat of government in the world's largest country. I delighted in the large walls, the towers with red stars on top, the government buildings, the golden onion dome churches, and the armory. See the larger than life tsar cannon and tsar bell on the grounds. You can feel the importance of this place as you walk through. A ticket into the Kremlin is money well spent. Plan a good portion of your day for a visit here.

Buildings around Red Square - Moscow

Buildings around Red Square

Red Square Red Square Review

With St. Basil's and other buildings in the mix, this square is a lot more than simply "red". The history here is intense. it has witness everything from the times of the tsars to the rise and fall of communism to the uncertainties of today. An entire course could be taught on the story that this place has to tell. Here, you will find the tomb of Lenin if that interests you. The place is surrounded by monuments. Notably, there is St. Basil's, the Kremlin, and the GUM department store. Predictably, there will be people who want to sell you stuff here, but you might find some of it interesting. It is simply too difficult not to visit Moscow without seeing Red Square.

St Basil's - Moscow

St Basil's

St Basil's Red Square - Saint Basil Cathedral Review

What more can I say that has not already been said? This building is a riot of color and to many is the symbol of Russia. If you have the time, I recommend viewing its domes at different times of the day and seeing how they change in color depending on the position of the sun and the cloud cover. Take photos and compare them when you get home. When you get to Red Square, this building would be impossible not to find. A nice place to admire it is on the lawn between it and the Kremlin walls.
