Largest Island in the Mediterreanean

Upper reaches of Taormina
Our trip to Sicilia was very spontaneous since we decided to take the ferry over from Malta to make a long day tour of a couple of places. Yes, our experience with the island was very brief, yet I have gathered some impressions to be able to write about that wonderful day.

We landed in the southern part of the island at Pozallo and rode north on the bus to Taormina and then the very slopes of Mt. Etna. All along the way, the countryside of the island could be viewed.

In America, almost every film that shows us a peek of Sicilia has something to do with the Mafia. It is true that this element does exist on the island, yet I think most who visit here will remember Sicilia for different things. If you expect to find olive trees, citrus groves, wineries, a rugged landscape, and hillside villages, then you will find what you are looking for. These classic images of Sicilia are indeed widespread. The views are amazing and the food is good. Throughout the island's history, there have been many conquests and visitors. You have Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs, and Romans to name a few. The island contains hints of the many cultures that have influenced this place. In a natural sense, the island is beautiful with its coastline, rugged hill country, and the majestic power of Europe's most active volcano. There is so much to do here, and we saw just enough to realize that. Even if you only have a chance to take a daytrip from another location as we did, I do suggest you try it. If it is possible to spend more time here, then that would be ideal. Bring your camera and an appetite. This is the Old World at its best.
