Getting TO/AROUND: Before arriving in Venice, it is possible to purchase online something called "The Venice Card". The price varies depending on your length of stay, and whether or not you want airport water transportation as part of the ticket. You can also get a version of the card that allows entry into certain museums in the city. We purchased a basic 3 day pass. With this pass, we were able to take a bus into the city, and then enjoy unlimited rides on the vaporettos (water shuttles). It is nice not to have to pay a flat rate every time you ride, although you could do this if you did not buy the card. The airport is on the mainland, so you may want to get the card which allows a round trip vaporetto between the airport and the city. Of course, you could get the basic card and take the bus, which is part of the price. It does not take long either way to get into the city. The vaporetto can also go to other islands such as Murano, where the glass blowing centers are concentrated. We bought the Venice Card online, printed out the vouchers, and had them exchanged for the cards upon arrival at the airport. There is a transportation booth where you can do this.
