Impressions of the first visit Our trip to Venice was in the off season. There were periods of fog and snow, however it did not deter us from exploring this very unique place. On the islands, there is no car traffic at all. Once the cars go across the causeway from the mainland, they must park in a vast lot. You either get around the center by foot or by boat. Both are enjoyable ways to travel here. There are plenty of attractions here. Many view Venice as one giant attraction--this could very well be true. It is an excellent place to walk, eat, shop, take photos, and recall a time in the past when this was a trade empire. Of course, do not miss Piazza San Marco. Even if you get lost in the maze of bridges, canals, and narrow streets, you will likely enjoy the sight of it. We came on the last day of Carnival. Although the cold and wet snow deterred many, it was fascinating to see some of the costumes. This is a good place to buy a mask. There are lots to choose from. Take a look around as much of the city as you can. Our time here was too short. Venice is a place like no other. When you do finally get there, you will see why so many people want to see it. |
