Spectacular Milford Sound

Described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’. Milford Sound is the most famous and accessible of the grand, glacier-carved fiords along the South Island's lower western coast. While it was named a 'sound', it's actually a fiord, because it was created by glaciers. A sound is a river valley that has been flooded by the sea.

The road to Milford is a wonderful alpine drive. Do allow plenty of time to stop and take in the photographic and walking opportunities along the way. I would suggest that you let others do the driving... You'll enjoy the scenery much much better!! That's what we did!! Sit back & relax. Afterall, it's your holiday!! There are coach tours leaving daily from Te Anau and Queenstown.

Come here and feel the mist of the waterfalls, look for seals on the rocks and marvel at the steep sides of the fiord.

Mt Talbot

A quick stop here... just before entering Homer Tunnel

Believe it or not... this is in the summer. It was freezing cold that day when we took the trip. It even hailed after we'd our cruise on the Sounds!! Do prepare for the worst... weather can change rapidly here!

Mirror Lakes

So, blame it on the weather for this milky & muddy water. On a good calm day, you'll see the reflected of the surrounding... living up to its name "Mirror Lakes"

What a pity that it was raining that day... :(
