We first became interested in The Gambia through reading about it in other VTrs travels, and I must admit it is a facinating country and was well worth the visit. We stayed at the Corinthia Atlantic in Banjul good, but certainly not as good as other four star hotels we've stayed in, although the staff were probably the happiest workers we have ever met anywhere, alway ready to help and always a smile on their faces. The warnings about "Bumsters" were definately over the top as apart from being a little over enthusiastic at times, they were never a real problem, and we certainly never felt threatened in any way. Most people spent their whole holiday around the pool or on the beach in front of the hotel only venturing out on the "Official" tours I can tell you they missed an awfull lot. most didn't even visit Albert Market just a ten minute walk from the hotel where you could buy just about anything at about a quarter of what the stalls in the hotel were charging. You will find most hotels have guides, they are just young boys trying to make a living, if you do feel you need a guide they are as reliable as any. We will definately be going back to The Gambia |
