  • This is a main train station in Paris - the Eurostar from London stops here. At nite, there are lots of crooks trying to see or outwit who they can con...

Our experience: as 2 men saw me fumbling for money to buy tickets for the local Paris train, one tried to approach me and ask if I needed assistance in reading the signs - as they are in French... It is like an ATM machine where you can purchase your tickets if the booths are closed. We were able to avoid them as we pretended not to speak English...

These cons or pickpockets might have some kind of friends lurking around the station too as 2 more people followed us to the local train entrance... Fortunately, there were enough people that nite - in case of 911...

There are cops patrolling the top and main floor of Gare du Nord but you are on your own once you go to the train itself...

Beggars / Aggressive Vendors: Eiffel Tower Vendors/Beggars

  • You will see alot of beggars in the Eiffel Tower - some will even beg for food... and will pester you - do not make eye contact and of course, ignore them...

"BEWARE of PICKPOCKETS" signs are also posted in the ticket booths...

The beggars are from the old USSR... while the vendors are mostly Africans... They will sell you trinkets and put them in your hands - when you return them, they will not accept it anymore. They also speak all kinds of languages - from Japanese, Chinese, English... Well if you look Asian, they know some words to make you 'smile' .... they sell keychains, postcards, etc...

But since there is a gift shop on the Eiffel itself - it is best to buy at the shops than these vendors or you might get 'cheap' counterparts...
