UNESCO declares Mount Golija Yugoslavia's first biosphere reserve September 17, 2001 UNESCO has proclaimed Mount Golija the first biosphere reserve in Yugoslavia and one of only 400 such sites on Earth. Mount Golija National Park consists of 75,000 ha of untouched natural resources, with a wide variety of plant species. Endemic maple trees and the area's cultural heritage, which includes the Mediaeval Studenica, Klisura, Sopocani and Stari Ras monasteries, are what make this mountain so special.
Golija-Studenica Biosphere Reserve is situated in southwestern Serbia and belongs to the inner zone of the Dinaric mountain system. It covers a mountainous region and includes a mosaic of different ecosystems such as forests, shrubs and lakes. The local population cleared parts of the forests over centuries and thus created species rich pastures and meadows which are still maintained today. |

| | Fresh, ice cold mountain water There are many springs on Golija. Very cold, clean, helthy mountain water. There is little city near Golija. City Ivanjica. I am suggesting that you buy food in Ivanjica and then go to Golija. Because, you want find restourantes on the mountain. But, we buy from peasants some good cheese, honey, meat, and other healthy food. That kind of food you can find only on the mountain ! In the cities we are eating poison! |
